Frightning Frighting Ever Think Ill Be the Same Again
Naturally, it's Lauren. That's not me in the picture up there, but it could be! I have a tendency of watching these movies through my fingers.
I'm here to break down the horror movies that I will NEVER. Watch. Again. Having to even think about these movies had me turning around in my desk chair and jumping at every sound my house made while I was writing this.
If you weren't aware, I'm the resident scaredy-cat here at Lights, Camera, No. I don't do too well with spooky imagery, jump scares, and gore. Re: all of the things that tend to make for a good horror movie.
I guess this is a good time to point out that this post definitely contains some spoilers. Reader, beware.
Here we go…
1. Insidious has to be number one for me. As someone who believes in the spirit world, the plot of this movie seemed pretty plausible to me. It pains me to do this, but there is one sole reason why I won't watch this movie ever again: The Lipstick Demon.
This nightmare-inducing fella is the main antagonist in the film. He terrorizes Dalton, a little boy who gets trapped in The Further (AKA spirit world). From what I gathered, this guy was the king of all the demons there, which was weird because aside from his terrifying claws and face, he's a pretty skinny dude. I guess he just showed up one day and started calling the shots.
Regardless of his body mass, he continues to scare the hell out of me to this day. In addition to his bad self, the other demons presented in Insidious Chapters 2, 3, and The Last Key were also quite terrifying. Mr. Lipstick Demon and his hellish companions are the reason I refuse to re-watch the Insidious series.
2. The Woman In Black is another movie (which was originally a play) with a horrifying antagonist.
Jennet Humfrye is deemed an unfit parent and her son Nathanial is taken away from her. Bitter, she watches from the sidelines as her sister, Alice, raises the boy. One day, Nathanial drowns in the marsh outside of their home and a mourning Jennet hangs herself in his nursery. Her spirit haunts the English village, beckoning children to take their own lives.
A pretty creepy plot, no? Honestly, I was fine throughout the entirety of this movie. Sure, there are jump scares aplenty, but I can live with those. What I can't live with is the final scene that's a tight shot of Jennet with her black veil over her face. As the camera pans in on her, she shoots her glare directly into the camera, or in this case, my soul.
I refused to see the second one, let alone watch this one again.
3. Saw also makes my list, if only because I'm afraid I'll pass out. While I absolutely love a good serial killer story (Jigsaw's pretty much a serial killer…right?) I can't stand the gore in these movies.
I want to say I saw at least up until the fourth one, but I can say with certainty that I've never watched any of them more than once. If I were EVER in a situation like any of these poor people, I don't think I'd make it out alive.
In addition to the intense amount of blood in these films, Billy the Puppet gives me the creeps. I remember losing a lot of sleep thinking this guy was going to wheel his way into my bedroom at night.
4. While we're on the subject of gore, Halloween – the Rob Zombie remake – also makes the list. In my opinion, this movie was straight up gore for the sake of gore. I can't blame spooky imagery for this one, but I can blame buckets and buckets of blood.
The scene that really screwed me up and haunted my brain for weeks on end after seeing this in theaters happened really early on. Daryl Sabara (who I had recognized from Spy Kids 😆) plays a bully. He picks on a young Micahel Myers, who later seeks revenge during their walk home from school.
Baby Michael Myers bludgeons his tormentor with a big ole' stick, burning this image into my brain for a really long time:
The rest of the movie (and the sequel) was just as gory and therefore hard for me to watch once, let alone ever again.
5. The Conjuring. Ugh, it pains me to write this, because I LOVE James Wan, but once again, he ruins me with the spooky imagery.
In an unfortunate twist of fate, it turns out that the same guy who plays The Lipstick Demon (a composer on the soundtrack, Joseph Bishara) ALSO plays Bathsheba.
After an unsuccessful attempt to sacrifice her baby to Satan, Bathsheba takes her own life and curses the land she lived on, haunting any family that would later live there.
This is one of the most widely known Ed and Lorraine Warren stories, second only to the Amityville Horror (probably). The Perron family seeks their help after being tormented by Bathseba's spirit, who eventually inhabits the mother, Carolyn.
The Conjuring is LiTtErEd with jump scares and plenty of Bathsheba screen time. It's another one of those movies that I saw once and lost a bunch of sleep as a result. Because I enjoy sleep too much, I won't be watching this one again.
I can only hope that I have forced you to think about some scary movies you never wanted to think about again. What movies are you avoiding for the rest of your life? Let me know in the comments.
Now that I've sufficiently terrified myself for the day…
